My husband publicly humiliated me in front of my colleagues at a formal event in a manner that caused severe psychological trauma requiring medical treatment. Can a single incident of extreme mental cruelty be sufficient to file a criminal complaint or does the law require a pattern of repeated behaviour?

A single incident of severe mental cruelty can be enough for criminal action, though this is assessed differently from a sustained pattern of lesser incidents. While cruelty complaints often rely on cumulative, repeated conduct, courts have recognised that a single incident of severe mental cruelty can be enough for criminal action when that one incident is grave enough on its own — such as a serious threat to life, an act causing significant psychological trauma, or conduct connected to dowry demands with serious consequences attached.

The severity, context, and impact of the single incident matter greatly in such assessments, and corroborating evidence — witnesses, immediate medical or psychological consultation, or contemporaneous documentation — significantly strengthens a complaint based on one serious event rather than a pattern. It is important not to assume that a single incident is automatically insufficient; each case is evaluated on its specific facts and gravity.
